As an Ornamental tree and in English it is given the name Royal Poinciana, Flamboyant, Flame of the Forest, or Flame Tree (one of several species given this name), (Delonix regia) is the Official “National tree of the West Indies of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis” respectively. Native to Madagascar. This species was previously placed in the genus Poinciana, named for Phillippe de Longvilliers de Poincy, the 17th century governor of Saint Christopher (Saint Kitts). It is a non-nodulating Legume. The song Poinciana was inspired by the presence of this tree in Cuba. Its Spanish common names are - flamboyán, chivato, flamboyant, Árbol de tabachín, malinche, ponciana real, acacia (en Venezuelay Panamá), Clavellino de Madagascar, Framboyán de Madagascar, Malinche de Madagascar, Árbol de fuego
After Monsieur de Poincy was appointed as St. Kitts’ first French colonial governor, he introduced the flamboyant, a tree hailing from Madagascar. Flamboyant of one of the most striking tropical trees. It shows off an abundant foliage shaded with yellow and scarlet flowers that bloom in May and August. It grows rapidly, its roots require a deep soil and it can endure a dry climate.
