Hi, this is Ricks Picks. Mathew is spot on regarding the dusty mold on your grapefruit tree. Depending on the size of your container, your fruit tree should only be watered about once a week. Any more than that and you risk drowning your grapefruit tree.

There is a new product out from the Bayer Company called “Bayer Fruit, Citrus and Vegetable Insect Control” which is watered into the drip line of the plant and is then pulled into the system of the plant and eventually pushed out to the leaves.

According to the Bayer Company, this product is safe to use on your fruits and vegetables due to a membrane at the end of the stem, which prevents the chemical from entering the fruit. The leaves then are no longer “tasty “to the insects.

Treating the tree for ants will also help to prevent any added complications from the little farming nemeses. You can also use a granular pesticide that is sprinkled around the base of the tree.

This product is moisture activated and is topical in nature meaning the citrus tree will not absorb any of the chemical. The Ortho Company and Spectracide both produce this type of granular product.

The product is basically ground up corn cob that has been impregnated with the chemical and will biodegraded into the soil. Spraying the leaves regularly with an insecticidal soap as Mathew suggested is a great idea as well and needs to be repeated often as Mathew indicated.

I would be careful when using a systemic spray on any of your fruit trees however. The systemic pesticide can be absorbed by the leaves and fruit thus contaminating the fruit.

The Foliar by Bayer is a safe fungicide that has been used successfully in combating fungal diseases on plants in the farming community and is safe for the honey bees too.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance to you. Be sure to take pictures of your trees progress and share them with the rest of the community.

This has been another of,

Ricks Picks
