Think of it this way: many plants, if given enough room, will establish deep roots. Some will have a larger central root called a “tap root”. It serves two purposes:

1. It acts like a drill to reach deep into the soil. Small hair-like roots grow off of it and pull nutrients and water into the plant
2. It stabilizes the plant and prevents it from tipping over or being uprooted by a grazing animal

But if the plant doesn’t have room, the roots (including the tap root) will be forced to circle around at the base of the container. This is usually called a “root bound” plant, and is something best avoided, as it is not a healthy growth pattern.

However, nurseries can temporarily avoid the ill effects of root-bound plants by applying plenty of water and liquid fertilizer to keep the plants looking healthy and tempting for buyers.
