There is a common misunderstand surrounding that word.

The Japanese word for green is midori 緑.　
The Japanese word for blue is ai 藍い (often translated as indigo but it's derived from the Chinese character for blue).

The Japanese word for blue-green (a color that has no real equivalent in English) is aoi 青い.

Aoi can also be translated as fresh or newly grown. And it just so happens that a lot of fresh and newly grown plant life does have that very light blue-ish green.

So it's really a case of a highly-nuanced word that has no true direct English translation being forced into one.

The kanji itself, along with the idea of blue-green freshness originates from Chinese. The word is qing 青 in Chinese and means the exact same thing as it does in Japanese. It's still used in Chinese but, like in Japan, the meaning tends towards blue rather than green, usually a light blue. You’re probably talking about this character: 青 It’s pronounced “ao” in Japanese, and “qing” in Chinese. Why am I bring this up? It’s because I think the character 青 had a very interesting evolutionary history. 青 originally could meant blue or green in Chinese, it’s an interesting phenomenon, but apparently, there are cultures that could not differentiate between the colors blue and green. Anyway, what I find interesting is that the word 青, which could mean blue or green in Chinese traditionally, has evolved different in Chinese and Japanese language. In modern day Chinese, 青 is used almost exclusively on things that are (naturally) green. Per esempio, 青草 (erba verde), 青山 (montagna verde), 青島(Qingdao, un luogo reale in Cina, ma il nome significa Isola Verde, come se l'isola fosse piena di alberi frondosi), 青蛙 (rana verde), ecc. Si noti che non si userebbe mai 青 per descrivere cose che sono innaturalmente verdi. Per esempio, nei semafori, non si chiamerebbe MAI la luce verde, 青燈 (sarebbe 綠燈, il carattere, 綠, in cinese può essere usato per riferirsi a qualsiasi cosa che sia verde). È interessante notare che in giapponese, la parola per la luce verde è in realtà 青信号

D'altra parte, in giapponese, 青 si è evoluto per significare quasi esclusivamente blu. Per esempio, 青い空 (cielo blu)、青い海 (oceano blu), ecc.

In rari casi, però, si vede sia il cinese che il giapponese mescolarsi. Per esempio, questa è la bandiera della Repubblica di Cina:

La bandiera si chiama 青天白日滿地紅 (cielo blu, sole bianco, con tutta la terra rossa). Si noti che il termine per cielo blu è 青天, e non 藍天 (藍 è il colore per blu in cinese moderno). Tuttavia, questo è un esempio estremamente raro, e la gente lo chiama solo 青天白日滿地紅 perché è il nome effettivo della bandiera. In mandarino moderno, nessuno chiamerà il cielo blu come 青天. Lo chiamiamo invece 藍天, anche in politica. Nella politica taiwanese, blu è il colore del patriottismo associato alla ROC, quindi quando diciamo che un certo posto a Taiwan sta votando KMT (partito associato con l'essere ROC-nazionalista), diciamo che quella città o contea si sta trasformando in cielo blu (變藍天), e mai 變青天

In giapponese, un raro esempio del contrario è quello del semaforo che ho già spiegato sopra.

Versione TL,DR: gli antichi cinesi non distinguevano molto bene i colori blu e verde con il carattere 青, hanno portato il loro daltonismo ai giapponesi. Nel corso di centinaia o migliaia di anni, l'interpretazione della parola 青 da entrambe le parti si è evoluta in modo diverso, anche se occasionalmente, si possono ancora vedere tracce del passato del carattere 青.
