The building itself isn't all that architecturally interesting, but it's lovely inside, tropical and elegant. The restaurants and bars are top-notch and the service is exquisite.
The last time I was in Bangkok I stayed at the Peninsula, which is just across the river from the Oriental. The Peninsula is considerably newer and more modern, and is also very elegant, but has a less convenient location and lacks the historical gravitas of the Oriental.
Both of them are lovely places to have afternoon tea.
If you are really all about commanding views, though, Lebua at State Tower might be the place for you. Here is the view from the rooftop restaurant, Sirocco. Non importa dove alloggiate, dovreste salire allo Sirocco una sera e bere qualcosa. È spettacolare.
I have a soft spot for the Oriental.
