Two tips

  1. Use as much as you can find. 4 — 6 inches is not too much
  2. Know when to not use it. That would include plants that need dry sandy soil like succulents. Also avoid using it all the way to the trunk of a tree as it can cause rot. You can safely mulch trees but leave a few inches of space around the trunk.
