QuickBooks Online and Xero are the closest competitors. Though you asked for comparison between multiple accounting applications on the cloud, I will focus on QuickBooks Online v/s Xero market shares as I have come across trusted data for the same and am part of the ecosystem.
1. Targeted Geographical segment: There is clearly a strategic positioning here which is working for both in their markets.
90% of QBO client base is in USA 94% of Xero client base is outside USA (UK, Aus, NZ)
2. Number of clients worldwide QuickBooks Online has 1 million+ SMB clients and counting (includes both free + paid customers)
As of December 2014, Xero has already onboarded 400,000 Paying Customers. (Xero being a public listed company, publishes numbers regularly)
