You’re probably asking because of the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker or maybe visions of sugar plums in the poem ‘twas the Night Before Christmas (aka A Visit from St. Nicholas). While there really are fruits that are sometimes called sugar plums, none of them have anything to do with either of the above. I will describe the fruit first and get back to The Nutcracker and ‘twas the Night Before Christmas at the end, so feel free to skip to the bottom.

There are three fruits sometimes called sugar plums (with or without the space). One is a type of plum, more commonly known as the prune plum, often used to make prunes.

Another is American Persimmon. It tastes sort of like a cross between a date and a plum.

The last one is Amelanchier. It is a member of the rose family and is an edible berry with edible seeds which give it an almond-like flavor.

But sugar plums of The Nutcracker and ‘twas the Night Before Christmas are a type of candy.
