I have composted for decades. Worked with the American Horticulture Society comparing different systems and equipment (bin design). Did doctoral research on it.
That said, I have found that there are only two rules for composting: Stop throwing compostable stuff away, and pile it up somewhere. It’s called a leaf pile. Just like what happens to fallen leaves in the forest. The rest is finesse.
If you don’t have two bins for alternating (fill one while harvesting the other), just pile new stuff on one side of the area and dig finished compost from the other end, once this gets going it is a continuous process. Want to speed things up? In order of importance:
Add different kinds of stuff, with an occasional light dusting of old compost or soil to add the critters that do the work. Chop big stuff smaller.
Add nitrogen (fertilizer, grass or other green clippings, kitchen scraps, freshly pulled weeds, coffee grounds, etc.)
Keep it moist and aerated (water or stir it up as needed)
Sone folks will have narrower views of things (like weeds, which have seriously never been a big problem for me) but my system is easy, inexpensive, low-input, and WORKS.
