Well, this is an interesting question, bringing up a subject I had never heard of before — the alkaline nature of the obviously acidic lemon. (One reason I love Quora - I’m always learning new things.)

I’m not a chemist, or even very knowledgeable about the pH of foods and the human body, but I do know a little about the pH of soil as it pertains to plants. My first thought was to say that the acidic nature of lemon water would not be good for plants if it were used frequently and for a long time, although it might be useful in limited quantity for balancing a soil that was too alkaline. I know that vinegar is sometimes used to acidify soils. (Information On How To Raise Acid Level In Soil)

Then I read the comments, and decided to do a little research. (When I say “little,” I mean “little” - like about 5 minutes. )

The first thing I found was that human digestion apparently turns the acidic lemon to alkaline . Lemon Juice: Acidic or Alkaline, and Does It Matter?. Reading a little farther - just the article headlines, not the whole articles - I see that this may well be another one of those ideas that circulate on the internet, and lead to all sorts of misunderstandings.

For instance, I think it’s highly probable that you don’t “alkalyze water by soaking lemon wedges in it” - it has to pass through the human digestive system to get “alkalyzed,” if that is the right term.

For the rest of it, the value of alkaline diet and all that, I don’t know. So che ogni anno o giù di lì qualche nuova intuizione sulla salute umana e la dieta fa la sua comparsa, e ormai ho avuto abbastanza anni per trattare tutte queste nuove intuizioni con diversi grandi grani di sale.
