What is “cherry picking” in an argument?

Typically it is used in an “Appeal to Authority.”

The cherry picker:

1. Claims a source as authoritative.
2. Selects only the points of the source that flatter their preferred argument, ignoring the points that do not support them, discarding especially the points that flat contradict them.
   1. The tactic of cherry-picking tends to rely on the opponent’s presumed unfamiliarity with the cited source. If it turns that the opponent knows the source intimately, they will pull out the flat contradictions and whallop you with them. You’ll be smashed flat, and every witness will see you’ve deserved it.

The crux here is this: the cherry-picker has cited the authority of the source as the basis of their argument. Typically pitched as an unassailable basis.
