Studies show that spending time outdoors is good for you[1].
One such way to enjoy your outdoor space at home is by having a patio. But when the weather gets too hot, it’s difficult to keep cool.
To ensure that you get to make the most out of your patio, here are some practical ways to tone down the heat.
Install a retractable awning
In the heat, the most obvious and most effective way to cool down the area is to add some shade.
Yes, you can opt for a pergola or an umbrella. But the ultimate outdoor solution would be retractable awnings[2] .
This is because you can easily retract it and extend it only when you need to. A pergola would be much more permanent whilst an umbrella would only be good for short use.
Use fans
There’s no doubt that fans will be great additions to your patio as they circulate the air around the area.
For better cooling results, choose misting fans[3] . These provide a refreshing effect better than regular fans as it uses water to cool the air.
Lay a rug
Do you have concrete flooring on your patio? Then laying a rug will work wonders!
Concrete can get very hot. And by placing some sort of insulation, you can limit the heat that you feel in the area, especially if you decide to go barefoot.
For a more permanent solution, you can opt for wood flooring instead.
Add plants
Having plants is a natural way to cool down an area. Plus, it can improve the aesthetic appeal of your patio!
As plants go through transpiration, the moisture released helps regulate heat and maintain humidity.
Some of the best plants to consider are palm, snake plant and golden pothos.

A gabled roof with space for hot air to rise, or a flat, risen patio roof with space for air flow between the roof of your home and the patio roof are two options ideal for hot climates. Secondly, you could consider covering the patio roof with either a permanent or temporary shade that blocks direct sunlight from heating up the space.
If you already have the patio, a great way to reduce heat is to cover the skylight ceiling with a shade cloth that blocks most if not all of the direct light and heat from hitting the roof surface. Adding plants such as ferns are also a good addition for creating a cooler, more relaxing space.
