Vengo dalla Spagna, uno dei paesi più turistici del mondo, e più precisamente dalla capitale, Madrid. È necessario chiarirlo perché le regioni spagnole sono molto diverse tra loro, e il mio punto di vista sui turisti potrebbe essere diverso da quello di qualcuno di Barcellona, Maiorca, Cadice o Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Mi piacciono i turisti. Penso che rendano Madrid una città più internazionale, mi piace sentire sette lingue diverse ogni volta che esco, mi piace aiutarli quando si perdono, mi piace che indossino cose tipiche dei turisti perché lo faccio anch'io quando viaggio e penso che dimostri la loro illusione di essere a Madrid, mi piace davvero tutto questo.

Quello che non mi piace sono gli effetti collaterali del turismo. Grazie alla politica di AirBnB, ora gli affitti sono ai massimi storici. Sta diventando più conveniente pagare un mutuo per una nuova casa piuttosto che affittarla. Ho sentito che questo è un problema ancora più grande a Barcellona. Odio anche quando i turisti -soprattutto quelli provenienti da paesi più ricchi- pensano di poter fare tutto quello che vogliono senza conseguenze, specialmente quando si tratta di bere a sbafo, fare tanto rumore di mattina e lasciare una terribile scia di sporcizia dopo l'orlo. Per fortuna, non tutti i turisti sono così e non succede così spesso a Madrid (in città come Magaluf questo è diventato un problema importante).

I live in Zurich, Switzerland. Apart from mountains and clear blue lakes we’re also known for our quaint little cities.

Now, Switzerland’s always had a tourist industry catering to winter sport enthusiasts with a bit of money to spare - just think of places such as Zermatt, Gstaad or St. Moritz but, of course, we also get urban tourists - and yes, I like them for a variety of reasons:

• they add a bit of international flair to the city
• they’re good for the economy. Zurich is an expensive city and tourists that visit the city are usually well off and thus spend quite a bit of money during their stay
• seeing that someone took the looong way from, say, Japan to travel to my city makes me feel a wee bit proud being from Zurich. The city is a nice place but it can hardly compete with classic European city destinations such as Paris, Rome or London in terms of excitement and sights. The fact that quite a few tourists from far away make it to the city makes me appreciate my city because apparently it has some appeal in light of the stiff competition it faces from other places on the continent
• This goes along with the prior point: seeing tourists, especially from countries far away, I sometimes wonder what they think of the place, why they chose my city and if they’re having a good time. Seeing tourists kind of kindles my curiosity.
