Just like apple and pineapple are different. Mango fruit belongs to the genus Mangifera whereas Mangosteen fruit belongs to Garcinia. The only common thing is that both are tropical fruits native to south east Asia.
Mangoes have reddish, orange or yellow skin, and soft orange flesh surrounding a stone (pit). Mangosteens have purple or purple-red skin, and white-fleshed fruit divided into segments like an orange.
