- Many mango cultivars bear heavy fruit for one year (on year) followed by near absence of flowering and fruiting in the second year (off year). Therefore, a cycle of heavy fruiting in on year alternates with a poor fruiting in off year. This phenomenon is known as biennial bearing or alternate bearing in fruit trees.
- Biennial bearing is due to the fact that the flower buds of the next year are preformed in the vicinity of the developing fruits. In the first cycle developing fruits produces hormones like gibberellins (GAs) that inhibit flower formation in the adjacent buds and flowering does not occur the next year. In the absence of fruits in the second cycle inhibitory effect of developing fruits is absent and heavy flower bud set and fruiting takes place(see figure below):
- An easy way to get annual bearing is to remove the flowers/young fruits on 50% branches. This shall result in moderate bearing every year on chronic biennial bearing trees. Application of anti-gibberellins like paclobutrazol induces annual bearing.
- Fruit breeders breed fruits with long fruit stalks that increase the distance between the developing fruits and buds This results in annual flowering trees.
