How do we grow miniature pumpkins?

The same way you grow the big ones.

They aren’t “baby” pumpkins. They are different cultivars of the same plant. You can think of it like Great Danes and Chihuahuas. Chihuahuas aren’t “baby” Great Danes, they are just a different breed of the same species.

The final size of a pumpkin is determined largely by genetics. There are lots of different cultivars available, ranging from massive half ton sized, all the way down to little tiny ones.

The ones I’m growing right now are a cultivar known as “Jack Be Little”. They are about three to five inches across.

Anche se quest'anno ho iniziato tardi, non piantando fino a metà luglio, mi aspetto che questi saranno pronti per il primo gelo. I tre semi che ho piantato sono stati piuttosto prolifici, e mi aspetto di raccogliere più di una dozzina di questi piccoli ragazzi.

Fanno grandi decorazioni autunnali così come sono, o possono essere intagliati in miniature jack-o-lanterns.

Le zucche in miniatura sono solo un'altra varietà della multiforme tribù delle zucche/squash/gourd. La specie è teoricamente Cucurbita maxima, ma gli ibridi dilagano. Si incrociano tutte abbastanza liberamente tra loro, quindi la cosa principale che devi fare è selezionare i semi del tipo che vuoi.

Puoi salvare i semi del tuo raccolto, ma è impossibile prevedere cosa crescerà l'anno prossimo, a meno che tu non abbia impollinato a mano e legato i fiori da solo.

Snack Jack è una bella liscia con molti semi paffuti. Jack-be-little è molto popolare. Le zucche da torta, come la Small Sugar, hanno una polpa migliore senza stringhe. Tutto dipende da quello che vuoi.

Sono facili da coltivare, e non sono diverse da qualsiasi zucca o zucca. Hanno bisogno di un terreno caldo, tonnellate di fertilizzante e molta acqua. In Canada di solito le iniziamo al chiuso in primavera perché hanno bisogno di più di 110 giorni per maturare. We grow them in market gardens all over the Vancouver area too.

I grew some in the front yard one year and the long vines pretty well took over the flower beds and I had to move them back off the lawn every couple of days. The vines can exceed 20 feet in length. There was a house on King Edward street in Vancouver that used to grow them in the front yard, and they had vines climbing the hedges and trees, with large pumpkins appearing high above the ground! Very amusing,

When you are looking for seeds, check both the “pumpkin” category and the “winter squash” category. Winter squash are Cucurbita maxima also, they are really just more varieties of strangely shaped not-orange pumpkins with hard shells that keep well over the winter.
