A2A - How do animals live in the desert?

The first thing to remember is that not all deserts are the same and not all deserts are even equally dry. For example, the Namib (one of the oldest and driest deserts in the world, has dry river-beds running through some parts where water can be found, mostly underground. Other deserts have oases. The limiting factor is also slightly different for the different animals, but there are basically 3 major ones they have to deal with:

1. The lack of drinking water. As mentioned above, some deserts have dry riverbeds (e.g. in the Namib where the desert elephants dig for water). Others have oases and many animals need to move between these water points. Some deserts (coastal deserts) have moisture-rich fog coming in from the sea… this water is often caught in various ways by smaller animals, especially some insects. Some animals lick the dew from plants. Some animals also have special adaptations to store extra water, minimize evaporation when cooling down (e.g. little or no sweat glands, allowing their temperature to rise etc.) and concentrate their urine to minimize water loss. Predators often get most of their moisture from the blood of their prey. Some desert plants store water in various roots and underground adaptations or some kinds of fruits (wild “melons” and “cucumbers”). Many animals make use of these water stores by digging them up and eating them.
2. The lack of vegetation means that herbivores have little to eat. This forces them to either travel a lot to occasional grazing and annuals that respond to periodic rain events, or browse from plants with deep roots in river beds or around oases or other scarce water sources. Of course, the general density of animals in deserts are much lower than elsewhere. Just like digging for water, some of the desert plant adaptations are used by both herbivores (and the occasional predator) as a food source.
3. The temperature in the desert tends to have much greater variability than other climates. This is partly because of the lack of vegetation and lack of shelter from the sun and heat. Some animals (e.g. oryx) allow their body temperature to rise during the day, but use a network of tiny blood vessels around their nasal cavities to cool down the blood, before it reaches their brain. Other animals congregate under trees close to water sources (like dry river beds or oases). Many smaller animals, especially in sandy deserts, hide under the sand during the heat of the day or in holes. In rocky deserts, some animals take advantage of rocky crannies, to escape some of the heat of the day.

In general, the animals you find in the desert are especially adapted to the desert environment in various ways, both by adaptive physiology (anatomy) and adaptive behaviour. Com'è non vivere in un deserto? Sono nato e cresciuto nell'area metropolitana di Phoenix in Arizona, conosciuta anche come la Valle del Sole. Il deserto di Sonoran è dove ho sempre vissuto.

Fa molto caldo. Ma caldo è solo una parola, e non una molto buona. La mia maestra di prima media l'avrebbe cerchiata e mi avrebbe detto di usare qualcosa di più descrittivo. Lasciate che vi dia parole migliori.

Il deserto sta bruciando. Puoi letteralmente bruciarti le mani sul volante. Ho avuto vesciche grandi come dollari d'argento sui miei piedi per aver ostinatamente camminato a casa da scuola a piedi nudi. Ho avuto ustioni di secondo grado dal sole. (Sono anche una rossa pallida, quindi mi scotto facilmente.)

Il deserto è feroce. Molte delle piante e degli animali sono qui per ucciderti, o almeno così sembra. Certe specie di cactus ti saltano addosso se solo una brezza li sfiora. Serpenti a sonagli, scorpioni e vedove nere sono tutti pericoli. Andiamo spesso a caccia di scorpioni durante l'estate. Ho visto coyote trotterellare lungo i canali.

Il deserto è ardente. Sai cosa significa ardente? Significa ardente o focoso, e anche devoto, amorevole, entusiasta. Amo il calore. Amo sentire il calore che irradia il sole e la terra. Durante la maggior parte dei giorni dell'anno, cammino fuori e mi sembra che il cielo stesso mi stia abbracciando.

Il deserto è intenso. Non abbiamo molto tempo, ma oh quando lo facciamo! Sentire il rombo del tuono nella terra e lo spessore nell'aria quando un monsone rotola attraverso la valle è emozionante. La pioggia è una meraviglia qui. E ricordo ancora lo stupore da brivido che mi assalì mentre guardavo l'avvicinarsi di una tempesta di polvere da record che bloccava tutto il cielo qualche anno fa. Le tempeste di polvere sono incredibili, e spesso precedono piogge forti e inzuppanti che durano solo poche ore. L'odore è delizioso.

Infine, il deserto è splendido. Ho incontrato persone da tutto il mondo che sono venute a godersi la nostra bella terra. Ricche rocce rosse, cactus di 15 metri, panorami mozzafiato. Sono stato in California, Texas, Nevada e Utah, ma nessuno di loro era così bello per me come il deserto.
