The southeastern North Carolina fishing village of Calabash, just above the South Carolina line, offers just about anything that one could desire. Calabash, at least so far, has been good for us here, for a far more relaxed lifestyle than what we were used to prior to retiring and relocating here building a new home. Calabash is good for those who

  • like to golf, as their are various well-maintained nearby golf courses
  • enjoy a downtown experience laced with old fashioned diners and thrift shops and a number of small businesses
  • enough Calabash-style seafood (Calabash being known as the self-proclaimed seafood capital of the world) and other restaurants to have what is essentially a restaurant row in downtown which has a lovely harbor area offering boat rides, fishing trips, fresh seafood (shrimp, scallops, etc.) being sold dockside, and waterfront restaurants situated smack on picturesque Calabash harbor.
  • even nearby well regarded, Mexican and Peruvian chicken family owned restaurants
  • great medical care and hospital offerings given that Calabash is sandwiched in between the Wilmington corridor on the North Carolina side and the Myrtle Beach corridor on the South Carolina side basically offering “the best of both worlds” of physicians, specialists, and surgeons of all kinds.
  • The noted Sunset Beach is a comfortable 15 minute drive and the beaches along the entire nearby coastline vicinity offer residents and visitors wonderful beach experiences and enjoyment.
  • The University of North Carolina - Wilmington is an hour long drive from Calabash and Brunswick Community College is approximately a 15/20 minute drive just up US-17 in Bolivia, N.C.
  • The theaters of Myrtle Beach, SC and of Wilmington, NC offer entertaining theater and shows throughout the year which you and yours can readily take advantage of. Those two cities, themselves, offer so many rich cultural and educational and recreational opportunities throughout the year for those seeking and wishing to take advantage of them.
  • Bonus: Calabash is approximately 100 miles from Charleston, one of the world’s richest historical, architecturally and socially rich cities imaginable, and moreover, a foodies paradise with many renowned restaurants and chefs. Also, Charleston possesses the outstanding Charleston Aquarium overlooking beautiful Charleston Harbor.
  • Bonus: The world renowned Brookgreen Gardens, the largest outdoor sculpture garden in all of North America and a treasure of the American South, can be found a not far drive away in Murrells Inlet, SC.
