Get 15″ self watering pots or the new rectangular self watering pots. Try Garden Tools, Planters, Raised Garden Beds +More to see different kinds. But I would go to a dollar store to buy the pots cheaper. To make them self watering, plug the bottom hole and drill some holes about 4″ up the side, place a couple close together in the back so the water drains away from you.
Get good potting soil and buy the plants at a local garden center. Yellow cherry tomatoes are good start and great for snacking. You should try to find types for containers. This is becoming easier now. Get cages for them as they need support and stakes are not that good in a 15″ pot.
When I plant them, I put a 500mg calcium pill in to prevent blossom end rot(google it). Because tomato diseases stay in the soil, you will need to change the mix every other year. You may get away with every 3 years.
