In the M-W Collegiate, we are told the following under “predicate”:
2: the part of a sentence or clause that expresses what is said of the subject and that usually consists of a verb with or without objects, complements, or adverbial modifiers . . .
Examples of PREDICATE
In the sentence “The child threw the ball,” the subject is “the child” and the predicate is “threw the ball.”
“There” is not part of the predicate. It’s called a dummy subject or an expletive (or a number of other things). “Many flowers” is a predicate nominative, and as such complements the verb. The full predicate is “are many flowers in the garden.”
