  1. Cut the coneflowers down to one-half of their length with pruning shears in the early summer. This is optional and can cause late-blooming, but the plant will grow back more compact and stocky.
  2. Deadhead coneflowers throughout the summer and early fall when the flowers wither or dry up.
  3. Cut them off from about 1/4 inch above the closest flower buds with pruning shears.
  4. Cut down the coneflowers to soil level after they stop blooming and wither or after a frost. Alternatively, you can leave the seed heads as they are over the winter. This can help promote self-seeding.
