Secondo Wiki, è la stessa cosa di un chemotipo. Un chemotipo è un'entità chimicamente distinta in una pianta o in un microrganismo, con differenze nella composizione dei metaboliti secondari. Piccoli cambiamenti genetici ed epigenetici con poco o nessun effetto sulla morfologia o l'anatomia possono produrre grandi cambiamenti nel fenotipo chimico. In altre parole, tra i composti delle piante, è il rapporto tra le varie molecole e le loro relazioni che rendono uniche le diverse chemovar.

Per esempio, la parola ceppo è usata correttamente quando ci si riferisce a microrganismi come virus, batteri e funghi. L'uso corretto per le piante è quello di riferirsi a diversi genotipi come cultivar, una forma abbreviata di varietà coltivata, che indica l'intervento del selezionatore nel patrimonio genetico della pianta. L'industria del vino usa i varietali per distinguere i diversi tipi di uva.

L'informazione più importante è data dal chemovar o chemiotipo che dalla cultivar. Even if the farmer is sure of the genetic forebears of a particular cultivar with a certain genotype, if grown from seed rather than clone it can also present a variety of phenotypes. Since a seed is produced by a female plant pollinated from the male plant randomly by the wind, or intentionally by the farmer’s hand, each seed is in fact unique. Even though they all come from the same female and in the case of a breeder the same male plant, the actual grain of pollen or the actual seed bract on the female might have a recessive gene from a distant ancestor, and so produce a different phenotype. Just as the same human mother and father produce children with different characteristics – one may have blonde and blue eyes while another red hair with green eyes or brunette with brown eyes, or any combination thereof.
