Well, first, plenty of moss grows on dirt. Half my back yard is moss on dirt. Moss likes shade and moisture, and under the trees in the back is ideal for moss.
However, there reason moss ALSO grows on rocks, is because the moisture and shade there is ALSO ideal for moss.
The thing about moss - a very very ancient sort of plant - is that it doesn’t really have ‘roots’ AT ALL. It has little fibrous threads for holding onto something - like a rock, or a tree.
It doesn’t need much ‘dirt’, and the moist crevices and chemical constituents of many rocks are just fine with moss. Moss likes things shady, moist, and not too hot. Otherwise, it isn’t very picky.
Moss grows on tree trunks too.
