You can also grow some of them indoors, or outdoors in the summer and then indoors in the winter. Otherwise, even the most cold hardy palm species in the world, Trachycarpus fortunei, will die in the winter unless if it is protected. All it takes is one winter night that is too cold to kill the plant, or to cause serious frost damage that will eventually lead to death.
