Not sure exactly what you mean by safe. Im assuming you mean, so it can reproduce, and the males and females don't miss each other. Well usually, they can tell by the time of year that it is, temperature and climate are key indicators. Some can tell by how many hours of light are in the day. The whole thing is simple though really.
Pollination occurs around the same time every year, right? So the get that from the hours of daylight, temperature and climate, so when those things pull the trigger in the females, they start to bloom and become receptive.
Now males. they are in competition to pass on their genes, and most drop pollen continuously throughout the season. Some may even start dropping early, just to make sure it has a better chance of reproducing. Even if it starts dropping early, it will continue to produce more flowers and they will continuously open throughout the season.
