The Keibul Lamjao National Park is a unique national park which is integral part of Loktak lake located in Bishanpur district in Manipur state of North East India.

  1. Total geographical area cover by the lake is approx. 40 sq. km.
  2. The Phumdis is the term of an local decomposed plant material which are floating on the lake.
  3. The geographical area declared as a sanctuary in 1966.
  4. Later in 1977 the sanctuary turned into national park.
  5. The park is formed by 66-75% of phumdis. These are actually thickened biomass with soil particles.
  6. The park has rich flora and fauna both aquatic as well as terrestrial.
  7. The Sangai also called the dancing deer, is the main attraction of the tourists in the regiin. The deer listed as an endangered species by IUCN.[2]
  8. The Thang, Brel, Meri are some local tribes lives in the region.
  9. Now a days due to heavy traffic of tourists and due to global climate change, the lake facing several challenges and hence the local ecosystem was disturbing.
  10. The Return of Sangai (Manipuri Sangai Hallakpa) is the film based on the floating lake. You can watch it for deep insight.
