Based on the mode of action insecticides can be classified as follows :

a. Physical poisons - These are substances that, due to their
physical nature, interfere with biological processes. dusts, fumigants, oils - asphyxiate insects

b. Protoplasmic poisons - These are substances that if a healthy living cell is exposed to in significant amounts, the cell will be adversely affected, damaged, or killed. e.g. are salt, alcohol, and sodium fluoride.

c. Metabolic inhibitors - These are substances that inhibit metabolic or
physiological processes (block biochemical pathways, such as action of enzymes) e.g. rotenone, synergists.

d. Neuroactive agents - These substances affect the transmission
of nerve impulses across synapses. e.g. Neonicotinoids.

e. Insect growth regulator (IGR) - It is a term coined to include
insect hormone mimics and an earlier class of chemicals, the benzoylphenyl ureas, which inhibit chitin (exoskeleton) biosynthesis in insects i.e. they inhibit moulting.

Meet Nopey the cockroach. He is one of the luckiest of creatures to have a suit of armor - an exoskeleton. And he is very proud of it. But just like any other armor, it is not very perfect. Although this armor can help him withstand more force and survive longer, it doesn't protect him from the instant death that comes from exposure to insecticide. Small pores and spiracles allow some of the harmful material to enter his system. Most of the time, the insecticide is absorbed by the skin.

For the insecticide, getting into Nopey's system is just the beginning. It has the potential to kill Nopey in an instant, thanks to active compounds like Pyrethrins/Pyrethroids[1] (often accompanied by synergists like Piperonyl butoxide).

Sure, there are other types of insecticides, but these type are more common. Moreover, they are less toxic to humans (they are destroyed fairly fast in mammals) if they aren't exposed to for a long time.
