I think this depends on several factors--the purpose of the structure, your experience with growing plants, your finances, the amount of land you have available. A greenhouse is generally defined as a structure built to allow plant culture which has a foundation, a heating and cooling system, electrical service, and a water supply. They are
expensive to build and operate. High tunnels are relatively inexpensive structures without a foundation, and usually without heating/cooling capabilities, which are used for season extension. Low tunnels are usually temporary structures which protect a bed of plants for a period of time. We use many low tunnels which are 4-foot wide and up to 100 feet long, made by covering a series of hoops with plastic, then weighting the plastic so that it does not blow off. We've got snow on the ground and have had temperatures from +6F to the high teens for a couple of weeks, and we've got cabbage and broccoli doing well under the low tunnels. Cost is minimal. We've got two high tunnels which I built. One is 10.5x12 feet and the other is 12x24 feet. We use the small one to start seeds, beginning in Feb, and currently the larger one has green onions, Swiss chard, leeks and garlic. Come spring, this one will be full of flats of plants awaiting sale or transplanting outdoors. Cost on these to build was under $500 and they pay for themselves every year. Commercial growers will typically have high tunnels that are 30x96 feet in which they extend the season on tomatoes, cucumbers, and other crops raised for sale. I taught horticulture in a school in a greenhouse that was 30x60 with good success. Cost to install that structure back in about 2005 was $75,000 and the cost to heat and cool it was pretty amazing.
