Earthworms have the following beneficial effects on soil[1] :

1. They increase soil permeability to air and water through burrowing, and their excrement increases soil aggregation (crumb-like structure).
2. They increase soil fertility by incorporating and digesting organic matter and supporting the growth of bacteria and fungi that decompose plant residues. Their excrement also moderates pH.
