In a hive of honey bees (Apis mellifera) there are three castes.
Queen. There is just one queen in a hive (but very occasionally there can be 2 queens, mother and daughter, but the daughter will take over. Role : laying eggs.
Drones. About 10% of the hive, during summer (in UK) time. They have one role - fertilise a virgin queen and then they die. Basically a typical man - sit around, eat the honey, and fly off and go into another hive before their big day. When they die.
Workers. All females and they spend their first 3 weeks looking after the brood, (nurse bees) , general housekeeping, etc. The last 3 weeks of their (summertime) life is foraging for nectar, propolis, pollen and water.
