Can I kill a palm tree by cutting one of its limbs?

Short answer: Most palm trees do not have “limbs” (but some palm species grow more than one stem), so no.

If the word “limb” refers to a palm tree frond, the answer is still no. I have seen coconut palms where a typhoon had ripped off all but a single frond (picture below) — a few years later, it had regrown its glorious crown!

To kill a palm tree, you have to cut it down (or prevent it from having access to water) — it is enough to cut out the palm’s “heart” (which is where it grows).

If the palm species is multi-stemmed (like e.g., the Açaí palm), cutting off one stem (to harvest its heart, a great salad enhancer), does not kill the plant.
