I'm no expert,and would guess that there are some trees that could work, but off hand I do not know for sure. This will require more research, so I'll describe how I would approach. In addition to Margaret's excellent advice, take a log with pictures if possible of what, if anything, is already growing naturally in abundance there. After doing so, you can then find what could also grow there based on your findings. Even weeds can tell you a lot about the existing soil. Just a few of the common Texas weeds and their potential indications:
Dandelion- poor fertility soil
Goosegrass - poor draining soil
Lambsquarter - fertile soil
Ragweed - poor fertility soil/low fertility
Also, consider also soil testing different parts of the land (be sure to label each one so you recall where you took the sample from) to see what amendments would be needed so as to bring the soil up to neutral pH and biodiversity, and what specifically, could potentially, naturally thrive there. University extension programs usually do soil testing for a good price, or can recommend local companies who do.
