Aloha,

Most any wood is food for termites, but here in Hawaii, there is a wood that is just too hard for termites to munch on: Mangrove[Rhizophoraceae, Rhizophora mangle].

This tree grows mostly at the shore line and marshy areas and can grow in salt or fresh waters. It resists ‘sea termites’[a type of boring clam] as well as land based termites, and doesn’t rot in either water.

Of the wood species most commonly used for building–Douglas fir, spruce, and hemlock–only Douglas fir is somewhat resistant to termite. It is best to avoid spruce and hemlock if termites are abundant in your area. Pine is another popular construction wood, but it’s also the wood termites seem to prefer above all.

In Queensland, cypress pine is resistant to termites and rot.

Red Iron wood has toxic compounds, no good for cooking, but great termite resistance.

Other timbers will need treatment to repel termites.

Termites will eat hardwoods if they are not treated.
