In wild peas, the Darwinian point is that there is a survival advantage. This can be extremely complex, and related to factors such as browsing animals and parasites etc, not just the likleyhood of germination. Many biomolecules are involved in more than one pathway. Many genes regulate more than one function.
If there was simply a cost and no advantage, then the characteristic would fade. Not all useless traits disappear immediately of course.
The pea is cultivated, so the measure of a pea's fitness is not as it was thousands of years ago.

Non tutti i piselli sono verdi. Alcuni sono effettivamente gialli. Infatti, questo fatto ha giocato un ruolo importante nella scoperta dell'eredità genetica di Gregor Mendel. Il colore verde è in effetti dalla clorofilla, che è probabilmente presente dall'embriogenesi iniziale. Potrebbe avere un ruolo nella germinazione del baccello del pisello.
