Perché il cibo tedesco è così terribile?

I’ve travelled all over Europe and lived in the UK, France and Germany for some years and I can offer some observations:

  • Italy does everyday food better than any other European nation: pick a random town and walk into a supermarket. You will see an unbelievable selection of the most beautifully prepared salads, breads, meats and so on. Delicious!
  • The Germans definitely make the best sausages: only the best cuts of meat!
  • The French definitely make the worst sausages in the Universe. French sausages take the concept of ‘lips and eyelids’ to a whole new level…
  • Although something of a Sunday tradition (you will often see people – normally a female – all dressed up and carrying a round plastic box containing said item) German cakes are very over-rated and mostly a matter of appearance over flavour.
  • German croissants are terrible and close to inedible: go to a typical bakery in France and enjoy a proper one.
  • German beer is great! But not massively better than what you can find in other countries. Especially Czech beer.
  • People say German bread is the best in the world, which I personally think is an exaggeration: a good French baguette with a decent cheese for lunch is a total delight. The Germans don’t have the equivalent. Also, I love the beautifully light Italian breads that are flavoured with garlic. Again, nothing like that in Germany.
  • German wine is so-so. Some OK whites, maybe. But there are some really exceptional Austrian reds. I have a source!
  • Most Germans do not like spicy food: If you have a dinner party, don’t serve a Thai Green Curry unless you cut the amount of chilli by 80%.
  • In spite of BBQs being something of a modern tradition (with many homes equipped with an ‘industrial scale’ BBQ), when it comes to what you put on the BBQ most Germans are pretty unimaginative and prefer to go to a supermarket to buy all manner of pre-marinaded meats intended specifically for the BBQ. Also, the usual preference is for ‘well cooked’…
  • The French have the best cheese (Germans try, but things like Handkase - a speciality in Hessen which is where I live - are a total fail)

The above is Handkase - note the cumin/caraway (a modern touch to make it more palatable…). An acquired taste (I’m being polite).

  • But, overall, given that the French invented cooking then you have to cut them some slack. They wrote the book.

If you’re from the North of Germany then you’ll enjoy tucking into a Fischbrotchen (fish bread roll), like this:

At every German market you’ll find a van selling these.

Strano.
