Goats are useful to us in a myriad of ways. Here are eight of them:

1. They can provide milk, from which we can make cheese, yogurt, ice cream and even a fermented beverage called koumiss.
2. They can provide fiber, which can be spun or felted and turned into hats, scarves, sweaters, etc.
3. They can eat noxious and invasive weeds, helping to clear land.
4. They are fun to watch, especially the kids, entertaining us with their antics and relieving depression.
5. They are friendly and calming and can provide companionship. Some have even been taken to nursing homes to help older people.
6. If goats are alternated with or run with cattle on pastures, they can help to keep down the parasite load of the other animal.
7. They can be 4-H projects, teaching young people how to take care of an animal.
8. They can be eaten, providing a source of protein for people.
