Le Catacombe di Parigi sono ben conosciute perché sono solo una parte della rete di gallerie di vecchie cave che esistono sotto Parigi.

Le Catacombe di Parigi descrivono infatti i vuoti sotterranei e le cave di Parigi in cui sono state depositate durante il XVIII e XIX secolo le ossa dei vecchi cimiteri di Parigi come il Cimitero degli Innocenti.

Quello che non è ben conosciuto è il resto. Almeno per il pubblico perché c'è una vecchia amministrazione che si occupa delle cave: l'ispezione generale delle cave. Questa organizzazione è stata creata nel 1777, il suo scopo è quello di garantire la sicurezza in superficie come nel sottosuolo. Per raggiungere i suoi fini esegue vari lavori (da nuovi pilastri a iniezioni di cemento). Dal 1955, un decreto municipale vieta a chiunque non sia autorizzato dalle autorità competenti di avventurarsi nelle cave sotto Parigi. The Catacombs themselves are not as vast as one might think if one considers only the part where the skeletons of the Parisians of yesteryear were dumped.

The part that can be visited is even less vast since it is only 11 000 m² and the path to cross it is only 1 500m long.

The Paris Catacombs

The word Catacomb, which refers to the Catacombs of Rome, should therefore be applied only to this part.

But this is not the case and it is the entire vast underground complex under Paris that is included in this way without the funerary character being obvious. This complex is mostly situated in the south of Paris but non only:

Only the official services have good plans and even this plans reserve some surprises: new galleries discovered, old galleries collapsed etc.

The catacombs are dangerous, it is easy to get lost in it, some galleries can be quickly flooded in case of heavy rain
