My experience has been that watering anytime is better than not watering if the plants need it, but afternoon is least ideal. Morning or evening are preferable. Some people swear by mornings with the idea that the sun will dry the leaves, but it rains at night and dew happens at night for a very good reason, so to me the wet leaves theory doesn’t hold water. Ahem. Couldn’t resist the pun. Certainly, if it has rained or you water too much, you can have problems, and certain plants really don’t like to have wet leaves for long. You just have to learn which plants like what.
Plants are much more resilient than we often give them credit for, and our treatment of them by babying them is too often the cause of their demise. Plants need to go through dry periods to send down roots to a proper depth. Watering regularly weakens them. Be inconsistent and they will be hardier.
