According to Indian guidelines laid by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (revised guidelines issued in 2011), an ecosensitive area is a buffer zone around upto 10 kilometers of a national park or wildlife sanctuaries. Activities like industrial plant set-up, deforestation and the likes which degrade the existing quality of environment are not allowed. However, ongoing agriculture/cultivation, organic farming, green energy establishments are permitted in this region.
Recently, the Supreme Court reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh Government for an alleged felling of tress within 500 m of the Taj Mahal. This goes on to prove that cultural heritage sites which are vulnerable to degradation due to anthropogenic activities also come under the ambit of guidelines.
