You certainly can! Growing pumpkins in small spaces is entirely possible if you have the right variety and a large pot or container.
You're probably accustomed to purchasing your pumpkins from a pumpkin patch, grocery store, or garden centre. Consider how entertaining it will be to plant pumpkins for Halloween and watch them grow. It's a great way to get kids interested in gardening.
A few key things to keep in mind — pumpkins need:
If you’re wondering when to plant pumpkins for Halloween, this timing is perfect. Pumpkins are slow-growers, usually needing 90-100 days to maturity. So if you plant in late May or early June, that puts harvest in mid-September or October
Plant 4-6 seeds in a large container with a capacity of at least 10- or 15-gallon.
Seeds should germinate in about a week after being planted. This season, I planted mine a month after the last frost, and they sprouted big and strong in just 5-6 days.
Thin them down to two or three per container once they have one or two sets of true leaves. If you live in a colder climate with a short growing season, you can start them indoors a few weeks before the last frost date to get a head start. Plant one seed in each peat pot with seed starting mix or potting soil. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and place them in a brightly lit window or under a grow light.
Pumpkins like: room to grow or climb, lots of sun, lots of food, lots of water
Pumpkins don’t like: small containers, shade, dry/infertile soil
If you don’t have garden space, but still want to give pumpkin growing a try, you can actually use a growbag or a pot/container, as long as it is large enough: at least 45cms wide and able to hold around 70 litres. Use high quality potting soil and make sure the pot has good drainage (lots of holes to let water out), pumpkins like a lot of water, but hate to sit in wet soil (this can cause them to go mouldy). Only one seed should be planted per pot. Place the pot in the sunniest spot you can find, and remember, even the smaller varieties need a lot of light to develop.
