No one in their right mind would eat one of these things by themselves unless they have a death wish. This pepper variety is, in fact, one of the hottest on the planet. About 45 seconds after putting one in your mouth, the fiery sensation starts and continues to intensify for 10 to 15 more minutes. The fiery sensation begins to fade about a half hour after starting to eat a ghost pepper. At the very least, you'll experience a painful, stinging sensation on your tongue when you eat a ghost pepper. Your lips, gums and inside of your mouth will likely sting quite painfully as well. Eating a ghost pepper can cause gastrointestinal irritation, resulting in stomach discomfort and diarrhea. Difficulty breathing can occur immediately after ingestion of a ghost. Inhaling the fumes of ghost peppers may cause cough, sneezing and rhinitis.

That does not mean that you cannot eat them at all. I find that a nice jelly or jam is a good way to go. You can make jelly with the following recipe:

Directions

1. Puree ghost peppers and 1 cup vinegar in blender (be careful of your eyes HOT FUMES).
2. Combine puree 1 cup vinegar and sugar in a large saucepan.
3. Bring to a rolling boil and boil for 10 minutes stirring constantly.
4. Stir in pectin and return to a rolling boil for 1 minute.
5. Remove from stove and skim foam.
6. Pour into jar and chill

Ho lavorato presso un produttore di terreni dove c'era un laboratorio dedicato alla coltivazione di molti tipi di piante per testare l'efficacia dei terreni e dei fertilizzanti. Una delle coltivazioni erano i Ghost Peppers. Peperoni fantasma perfettamente maturi. I peperoni venivano portati nella sala da pranzo perché i dipendenti li portassero a casa.

Alcuni lavoratori latini si sono lasciati coinvolgere in una gara di chi è più macho che è culminata in una scommessa in cui il dipendente più macho ha vinto mangiando un intero peperone fantasma!

Circa tre minuti dopo tutto quello che aveva mangiato nelle ultime 36 ore era sul pavimento o nel water (più o meno). Non ha lavorato per i due giorni successivi e per tutto il fine settimana.

Ricordate. È una spezia, non un cibo.

Per una delizia del gusto provate la senape 'I Dare You Stupid'. Fatta con un po' di Carolina Reaper Pepper. Non la proverò, ma l'ho vista far piangere gli uomini se applicata troppo generosamente su un Hot Dog.
