Alright - You are going to keep this succulent alive! Lets just break this down to 3 easy topics:

Soil:

main-qimg-7ff664a8bec8d0bd6dd7eb405151f9f3-lq
  • Avoid using normal soil for succulents.
  • Succulents are used to growing in terrains where the water travels through quickly and does not stay wet for long. Your potting soil should be the same!
  • Either buy cacti & succulent soil or you can take normal soil and add a good amount of per lite to it. This allows the soil to get more oxygen and to dry quicker
  • Wet soil for a long amount of time = Rotten succulent roots

Light:

main-qimg-842e9a3ca29fc6144b3a96f110d35fe0-lq
  • Succulents CAN get sunburn
  • There is a misconception the all succulents want to be in extended amount of direct light. THIS IS FALSE. You can see pictured above, this little guy got sunburn from being exposed to direct light
  • Depending on your plant, your succulent may prefer high indirect light . Plants that do not have leaves, like a cacti, can handle direct light since plants loose their moisture through their leaves and they have none. In addition, prickly cacti like the golden ball get shade from their needles.

Water:

  • When you water your succulent, water it as you would water any other plant
  • It’s a common misconception that you should not fully water succulents since they like to be dry. Many people use sprays or ice cubes to water instead and this can cause some challenges.
    • Spraying: You may not be getting water to the roots, which is how plants absorb water
    • Ice cube: Ie cubes may only distribute water to one part of the soil and the rest of the roots will get no water :(
  • Instead, water you succulents very thoroughly, but wait until the soil is completely or almost completely dry. This makes sure all of your roots get a chance to soak up water and your well ventilated soil will make sure they don’t suffer from root rot.

I haven’t kept succulents myself, but I hear they are fairly difficult to care for!

Here are some guides for succulents: 5 Mistakes You’re Making With Your Succulents (And How to Grow 'Em Right), How to Care for Succulents Indoors, How to Care for Succulents (And Not Kill Them): 9 Plant-Care Tips.

Many plants are easy to keep, and you can just kind of water them whenever—maybe the first step is to succulents is to just know that they need a little more TLC than the typical plant!
