Tillandsia è un genere di circa 650 specie di piante da fiore sempreverdi e perenni della famiglia delle Bromiliaceae, originarie delle foreste, delle montagne e dei deserti dell'America centrale e meridionale, degli Stati Uniti meridionali e delle Indie occidentali.

Si sono stabilite naturalmente in ambienti diversi come le foreste pluviali tropicali equatoriali, le montagne delle Ande ad alta quota, le regioni rupestri e le paludi della Louisiana, come il muschio spagnolo, una specie che cresce in cima agli arti degli alberi. Airplant è un nome comune per le piante di questo genere.

La maggior parte delle specie di Tillandsia sono epifite, cioè crescono normalmente senza suolo e attaccate ad altre piante. Alcune sono aerofite o piante aeree, che non hanno radici e crescono su terreni desertici mutevoli.

Generalmente, le varietà a foglie sottili crescono in aree piovose e le varietà a foglie spesse in aree più soggette a siccità. La maggior parte delle specie assorbe l'umidità e le sostanze nutritive attraverso le foglie dalla pioggia, dalla rugiada, dalla polvere, dalle foglie in decomposizione e dalla materia degli insetti, aiutati da strutture chiamate tricomi.

They range in size from a half inch tall to about 4 inches maybe more. Because they require no soil, where you can put them and the designs you can create are boundless. They are cheap, you can get a variety pack of 5 for around 5–7 dollars. They require little maintenance, I mist mine every other day then give them a good soaking once a week.

Bright filtered light is the general rule, and the higher the humidity of the air the higher light will be tolerated. Outdoors the silvery-leafed varieties (ex: Xerographica, Harissii) can usually be grown in full sun.
