Lots of stuff. This would go on forever, but I’ll try to keep it short.

  1. Hawaii resident = Hawaiian. This is probably the most common misconception I hear, and there’s a handful of people out there who despite me explaining this multiple times, still don’t get it. In order to be Hawaiian, you must have real native Hawaiian ancestors. If not, you or whoever you’re talking to is no more Hawaiian than some random guy in Arizona is Navajo, Hopi, or Apache.
  2. Everyone in Hawaii surfs and dances hula. Well, I don’t. That should say it all.
  3. Any food with pineapple in it is Hawaiian. Big no to this. Pineapples were introduced to Hawaii from South America in the 1800s.
  4. You need a passport to come to Hawaii as an American. Not anymore than you would traveling to Alaska or any other state in the US. Ya know, cause we are a state.
  5. If you’re white, watch out for “kill a Haole day.” I had never heard of this until I read about it online, and even my father, who went to a school in a very rural area hadn’t heard of it either. It’s a lie, and I’m tired of hearing it come up.
  6. Haole is a racial slur/insult. It’s no more offensive than referring to yourself or someone else as “white,” “black,” or “Asian.” While it used to refer to any non Hawaiian, it’s just an alternative way to say “caucasian.”
