Original question: What are the differences between a maggot and a grub?

A maggot is the larva of a fly - they generally feed on decaying animal matter.

A grub is the larva of a beetle - they generally feed on plant roots.

Some grubs are serious plant pests, while maggots are generally beneficial in getting rid of decaying flesh.

I was asked to answer this and its a fair enough question. Starting off in the simplest terms first and then getting more detailed, we have the following:

Differences between grubs and maggots.

• Maggots are young flies at larval stage of the flies' life cycle.

• Grubs are young beetles in the second stage of the beetles' life cycle, the egg being the first.

• Though maggots and grubs look very similar, flies and beetles are different insects. Maggots are almost always smaller than is a grub, also notice the 6 legs of a grub.

Generally, maggots live in areas with an abundance of food materials that are rotting, since they are voracious feeders. Le larve si nutrono di radici e vivono nel suolo.
