If you're going to grow vegetables, except for broccoli and cauliflower, they will fare far better if you have a healthy population of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) living in the root system.

Round-up at the recommended application rate is 100% effective at killing AMF, so your soil will be barren from that perspective.

You should make a very intentional effort to inoculate your seeds with AMF spores before planting.

Options:

  • Build a low cost Johnson-Su Composting Bioreactor[1] and use it as a source of inoculant. Unfortunately it takes a year from start to end of the process. You need to wait until the AMF have run out of food and have left behind a high density of spores in the compost, so there is no shortcut. Coat your seeds in the compost. Or mix it into your potting soil.
  • Buy AMF spores - preferably as a powder, then wet your seeds and roll them in the powder before planting. If you’re transplanting, then you want your AMF spores in liquid so you can pour them over the roots. AMF exists as couple hundred different species. AMF that evolved to life with grass or trees won't help your vegetables. MycoGrow® For Vegetables is a good option.
  • Indigo Ag has gone from a start-up to a billion dollar company by selling seeds to farmers with a coating of various spores in place. I don't know if they even sell seeds for vegetables.

The Johnson-Su Composting Bioreactor is likely the best choice as it will have millions of different species spores in your inoculate.

If you build a Johnson-Su unit of is critical NOT to turn over the compost. The whole purpose is to let the microbes go through their lifecycle without any mechanical disturbance.

Nature evolved to have plants living with large numbers of different microorganisms, just like your gut needs a large number of different microorganisms to function properly.
