Often when people ask about what to feed a plant they are asking if a particular fertilizer is needed. There is a common misconception that a fertilizer is the most important thing to make a plant healthy. (I blame Miracle*Grow ads).

Far more important is providing overall proper growing conditions for the plant. Adequate but not excessive water, proper soil texture and drainage, the correct amount of light, temperature range etc. These and other factors will vary from species to species. Get the growing conditions right first, only then look at fertilization.

It's difficult to provide adequate light and scale insects can be a serious problem. If your indoor citrus tree can spend the warmer months outdoors, it will be much healthier.

(don't pee on your tree) Urine provides nitrogen, but unless you dilute the urine adequately and don't over do it, you could wind up with a damaged, over fertilized tree.
